Callbreak is a popular card game variant originating from South Asian countries such as Nepal and India. It is akin to the classic spades game but with distinct regional adaptations. The game involves four players who each receive a set of 13 cards from a standard 52-card deck known as "thirteen patti." With its straightforward rules, this game is easy to grasp, making it accessible to both beginners and experienced players. Additionally, players have the option to select different card themes, enhancing their overall gaming experience.
The basics
In Callbreak, four individual players participate in the game with a standard deck of 52 cards. The game consists of five rounds, with separate scorekeeping for each round. Within each round, there are 13 deals. In every deal, each player contributes one card, resulting in a total of four cards per deal. A round is completed when thirteen tricks have been played. To complete a full game of Callbreak, five rounds must be played.
The gameplay
At the start of each game, all 52 cards are distributed equally among the four players in a counterclockwise direction. Each player receives 13 cards, referred to as "thirteen patti." After the distribution phase, players must declare their bid or "Call" for the upcoming round. The Call represents the number of deals a player aims to win within that specific round. The Call is determined based on the cards held by individual players. Each player must declare their Call within the range of 1 to 8, considering their hand cards carefully and placing their bid accordingly.
The objective of Callbreak is to surpass or "break" the bid made by another player.
Once all bids have been made, the dealing phase commences. The player to the right of the dealer starts the game by playing a card for the first deal. Subsequently, the remaining three players play one card each, one after the other. The player who plays the next card must attempt to beat the cards already played in that deal. The highest-value card played wins the deal. The winner of each deal then throws the first card for the subsequent deal. In each deal, players must follow suit with the initial card and ensure that they play a card that is higher in value than any previously played card. If a player does not possess a card of the same suit, they must play a trump or spades card. If a trump card has already been played, the player must then play a higher-value trump card if they have one.
After completing 13 deals in one round, scorekeeping is conducted. The player with the highest number of won deals after all five rounds will be declared the winner of the game.
Card ranking in CallBreak follows the order of A-K-Q-J-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2, with spades serving as the predefined trump suit. Players are unable to declare any other suit as trump.
